In Chinese medicine, Angelica is used primarily for health conditions in women. It is also given for strengthening ?blood?, for cardiovascular conditions/high blood pressure, inflammation, headache, infections, and nerve pain. The essential oil of Angelica provides good protection for the liver and promotes its function by stimulating secretions from the liver. It is also believed to provide relief from renal calculi, overweight, hypertension and symptoms associated with accumulation of toxins in the body, such as rheumatism, arthritis and gout. Chinese Angelica (Dong quai) has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese medicines. It is referred to as the female ginseng even though it is used for both genders and for all sorts of body ailments.

Native Americans used the American species to treat respiratory ailments, in particular tuberculosis as did Europeans with the European species.

Angelica is used for heartburn (dyspepsia), intestinal gas (flatulence), loss of appetite (anorexia), overnight urination (nocturia), arthritis, stroke, dementia, circulation problems, "runny nose" (respiratory catarrh), nervousness and anxiety, fever, plague, and trouble sleeping (insomnia). Some women use angelica to start their menstrual periods. Angelica is also used to increase urine production, improve sex drive, stimulate the production and secretion of phlegm, and kill germs..
