Agave nectar (also called agave syrup) is a healthy natural sugar substitute. It is sweeter than honey and has a very low glycemic index. Traditionally, the leaf of the agave has been brewed into tea to treat constipation and flatulence; while the root is brewed into tea to relief arthritic joints and the raw leaf is used as a diuretic. Studies have shown that Agave has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Centuries ago, the Aztec peoples are said to have used the agave plant?s nectar as a natural sweetener, they consumed the pulque derived from Agave in religious ceremonies, and they treated wounds with Agave sap, in addition to a number of other uses.

The juice made from the agave plant contains estrogen-like isoflavonoid, alkaloids, coumarin and vitamins B1, B2, C, D and K, and provitamin A. Traditionally, it was used internally to treat ulcers, stomach inflammation, tuberculosis, jaundice and other liver diseases, syphilis, and menstrual problems. Additionally it is used as a treatment for high fever by inducing sweat.
