Benzoin is a balsamic resin obtained from Styrax benzoin (family Styracaceae), used as a stimulant expectorant, but usually by inhalation in laryngitis and bronchitis. It is effective in treating a wide range of other illnesses such as asthma, eczema, cold, cough, chills, arthritis, psoriasis, stress, chilblains, muscular pains, mouth ulcers, nervous disorders, bronchial congestion, rheumatism, chapped skin, skin irritation, colic and stiff muscles. The oil extracted from this resin is also proved to calm the mind and body when diluted in bathing water. It is also aid to treat depression and mood fluctuations. Benzoin resin is also used to enhance blood circulation and the elasticity of the skin.
Benzoin has a long history of use in the East as incense and in perfumes. Indigenous societies from Java to India inhale it to treat cold, dry cough and sore throat and ingest it as a cure for urinary infection. Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama sent back Benzoin to the European shores for the first time after arrival from India in 1498.
People take benzoin by mouth for swelling (inflammation) of the throat and breathing passages.
