It has been used as a digestive tonic, in strengthening the nervous system, de-stressing, regulating menstrual cycle, lessening the symptoms of PMS, relieving rheumatic pain and in healing wounds. Additional applications include in aiding the treatment of fever, congestion, asthma, intestinal problems, insomnia, stress and depression. It is also said to be beneficial to digestion, metabolism and breakdown cellulite.

In northern Europe, verbena was considered a sacred plant and was used as a defense against illnesses and as a component of love potions. It is also believed to have a mild calming effect on nerves.

Lemon verbena is used for digestive disorders including indigestion, gas, colic, diarrhea, and constipation. It is also used for agitation, joint pain, trouble sleeping (insomnia), asthma, colds, fever, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, skin conditions, and chills.
